Secret Spiti Socks
Secret Projects are delighted to be collaborating with The Spiti Projects Charity in the sale of the famous Spiti Socks alongside our Secret Products range. These socks are made by 5 co-operatives of women living in the Spiti Valley: a cold desert mountain valley located high in the Himalayas in the north-east of the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh.
The women of Spiti meet on the roof of their houses when the sun is warm in the middle of the day to knit and weave together. The women were taught to knit socks with heals by missionaries who were present in the area. The women created their own twist by adding elaborate coloured geometrical patterns on socks. Still to this day, the patterns are not written down and simply passed down from mother to daughter. For this reason, each pair of Spiti socks is completely unique.
